The plaintiff, identified as R.K.C., alleges that years of exposure to platforms like TikTok, YouTube, Meta, and Snapchat led to severe psychological struggles, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Attorneys from Morgan & Morgan, who represent the teenager, confirmed the settlement on Wednesday but declined to disclose specific financial terms or conditions. This agreement follows a similar settlement reached with YouTube in June.
With TikTok now removed from the upcoming July 27 trial, the proceedings will focus on the remaining defendants, Meta and Snapchat. Legal observers view these cases as a critical barometer for thousands of similar lawsuits filed across the United States. While the tech giants maintain their stance against liability, the frequency of these settlements—including a $27 million payout to a Kentucky school district in May—suggests a strategic effort to avoid courtroom scrutiny of their engagement-driven features like infinite scroll and autoplay.
