Syria Navigates High-Stakes Diplomacy in Beirut

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani arrived in Beirut on Thursday for high-level talks, marking his first regional visit since Donald Trump publicly suggested Damascus might deploy forces against Hezbollah. The trip highlights a precarious balancing act for a regime attempting to signal neutrality amid shifting geopolitical alliances.

Al-Shibani held private meetings with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, a key ally of Hezbollah. The discussions come as President Ahmed al-Sharaa officially denies any intention to join the fray. Although the new Syrian leadership has moved to align with U.S. interests since 2024, the administration remains wary of Washington’s pressure to intervene against the militant group.

Damascus faces a difficult choice: maintaining its fragile stability or risking domestic sectarian unrest by following U.S. encouragement. By engaging directly with Beirut’s political establishment, al-Shibani is attempting to insulate Syria from the deepening Iran-Israel conflict. The visit serves as a calculated effort to manage expectations and avoid being drawn into a wider regional war.
