Orano Secures €125 Million for French Nuclear Medicine Facility

The European Investment Bank has finalized a €125 million credit agreement with Orano to construct the Advanced Thorium Extraction Facility in Bessines-sur-Gartempe. This investment aims to scale the production of lead-212 for targeted alpha therapies, a precision treatment designed to eliminate cancer cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.

The new facility will serve as the world's first industrial-scale site for producing thorium-228, the critical precursor for lead-212. By localizing this supply chain in France, the project bolsters Europe’s strategic autonomy in medical manufacturing. Once operational, the site will feed Orano Med's network of laboratories where clinical-grade therapies are developed for patients suffering from cancers with significant unmet needs.

Orano Med currently manages four clinical programs in collaboration with partners including Sanofi, Roche, and Molecular Partners. This financing follows a €400 million loan granted to the Orano Group in March 2025 for its uranium enrichment operations at the Tricastin site. EIB Vice-President Ambroise Fayolle noted that the deal aligns with European priorities for both industrial resilience and medical innovation. Orano Med CEO Frédéric Desdouits emphasized that the funding allows for a centralized production platform, ensuring a stable supply of rare radioisotopes for next-generation oncological treatments.
