AIBA Chairman Rebukes Opposition Over CJI Intervention Request

A coalition of 23 opposition parties has bypassed traditional administrative channels, submitting a formal memorandum to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud regarding electoral roll revisions. The move to involve the judiciary in election management has triggered a sharp rebuke from the legal fraternity, signaling a deepening institutional friction.

Adish C. Aggarwala, Chairman of the All India Bar Association, condemned the submission, arguing that the Chief Justice holds no mandate to oversee the Election Commission’s administrative functions. He characterized the opposition’s outreach as an improper attempt to drag the judiciary into active political maneuvering. According to Aggarwala, parties harboring grievances regarding electoral processes should instead utilize established legal remedies rather than seeking judicial intervention through political correspondence.

The memorandum, signed by members of the INDIA bloc including the Aam Aadmi Party and DMK, represents a rare moment of unity among a wide spectrum of opposition groups. By invoking the judiciary, these parties aim to project a unified stance of resistance against current electoral protocols. However, this strategy faces mounting scrutiny from legal observers who warn against the blurring of lines between constitutional oversight and partisan political strategy.
