Marine Le Pen Faces Defining Court Ruling on Presidential Ambitions

A Paris courtroom will decide next week whether Marine Le Pen remains eligible for the 2027 presidential race. The ruling on her appeal follows a conviction for the systematic misuse of European Parliament funds, a verdict that currently carries a five-year ban from holding any elected public office.

The legal battle centers on allegations that Le Pen funneled over 4 million euros in EU resources to pay staff working exclusively for her political party. Triggered by a 2013 Mediapart investigation, the case evolved into a seven-year probe, ultimately placing the far-right leader at the heart of a complex, multi-defendant trial.

In March 2025, the court delivered a punishing blow, concluding that the misappropriation of funds was not an isolated incident but a structured scheme. Should the appellate judges uphold the lower court’s decision, Le Pen’s political trajectory will be effectively halted. An acquittal or reduction in the sentence, however, would clear the path for her to challenge for the presidency once more. The outcome of these proceedings remains the singular variable determining her future in French politics.
