Trump Debuts $400 Million Qatari-Gifted Boeing 747-800

President Donald Trump completed his first flight Wednesday aboard a retrofitted Boeing 747-800, a $400 million gift from Qatar that marks a sharp departure from the traditional Air Force One aesthetic. The aircraft, featuring a navy-blue, red, and gold livery, serves as a stopgap while the military completes two long-delayed presidential jets.

The interior reflects Trump’s personal preference for opulence, boasting plush carpeting, lie-flat seating, and wood paneling. Unlike the Cold War-era jets it replaces, this model lacks some advanced missile detection and countermeasure systems. The Air Force acknowledged that several complex engineering modifications were intentionally excluded to expedite the transition, leading aviation experts to suggest the aircraft is primarily suited for domestic travel rather than high-stakes international missions.

Despite these technical limitations, the president has signaled his intent to use the jet for an upcoming NATO summit in Turkey. The rapid conversion process has sparked scrutiny regarding the ethical implications of accepting such a high-value gift from a foreign government. While the Air Force maintains that no security risks were accepted during the modification, the jet remains a bridge to the future fleet, which is not expected to be operational until at least 2028.
