Wang Yi Presses Rubio on Taiwan Stability

During a Tuesday phone call, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to handle Taiwan-related affairs with extreme caution. The conversation highlights Beijing’s ongoing attempt to manage rising friction, as diplomatic channels between the two powers remain critical to avoiding potential escalation in the region.

Wang emphasized that any miscalculation regarding the self-governing island could carry significant consequences for bilateral relations. His request follows a mid-May summit where President Xi Jinping warned Donald Trump that Taiwan remains the primary source of strain between the two nations. While Beijing continues to assert sovereignty over the territory and opposes foreign interference, it maintains a public commitment to seeking a stable strategic partnership with Washington.

Despite the friction, both Wang and Rubio agreed to preserve open lines of communication. The U.S. maintains its long-standing policy of supporting Taiwan’s defense capabilities, creating a persistent diplomatic hurdle that complicates the broader engagement between the two global powers.
