Congress Demands Privilege Motion Against Defence Minister Over Casualties

Six soldiers died during Operation Sindoor, yet Defence Minister Rajnath Singh told the Lok Sabha that no personnel were lost. Congress leader KC Venugopal has now petitioned Speaker Om Birla to initiate privilege proceedings, accusing the Minister of delivering a clear-cut lie that undermines the integrity of parliamentary record.

The dispute centers on a July 2025 address in which Singh categorically denied any fatalities during the mission. This statement clashed with the subsequent reality of the operation, which was launched as a retaliatory strike against terrorist infrastructure in Pahalgam and across the border in PoJK.

Venugopal argues that the discrepancy is not merely a political oversight but a breach of parliamentary decorum. While the six fallen soldiers have since been honored at the National War Memorial, the delay in official acknowledgment remains a point of contention. The request for privilege proceedings seeks to hold the government accountable for the disconnect between official statements and the verified loss of life in the field.
