UK Electric Vehicle Industry Faces £1.4 Billion Tariff Threat

A looming shift in post-Brexit trade regulations threatens to impose £1.4 billion in tariffs on electric vehicle exports to the European Union. Starting in January, the new rules will hit 70% of UK-made electric and plug-in hybrid models with a 10% levy, jeopardizing the sector’s competitive edge across the channel.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) is sounding the alarm, urging an immediate resolution to local content requirements that were previously granted a stay of execution in 2023. With the transition to zero-emission vehicles accelerating, the industry warns that the European Commission's current regulatory path could stifle growth just as the UK and EU align on phasing out combustion engines by the 2030s.

The urgency is compounded by a shifting domestic political landscape, leaving manufacturers in a state of uncertainty. Without a diplomatic breakthrough to align these trade standards, the cost of doing business with the UK’s largest automotive partner will rise sharply, potentially pricing British-built models out of the continental market.
