The Wellington-based restaurant Essence claimed the country’s highest accolade, securing two Michelin stars for its exceptional standards. Beyond this top honor, fourteen establishments, including Auckland’s Paris Butter and Queenstown’s Amisfield, received one star each. The guide also highlighted thirty-five venues with the Bib Gourmand distinction, honoring those that balance high-quality cuisine with accessible pricing.
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston noted that this international validation reflects the consistency and creativity defining the local scene. With the hospitality industry contributing approximately NZ$9 billion to the national GDP annually, the government views this global spotlight as a vital catalyst for tourism. While the current guide focuses on Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown, officials plan to leverage this momentum to draw visitors toward diverse regional food cultures throughout the country.
