FBI Neutralizes 300 Drones During World Cup Security Sweep

With the World Cup at its midpoint, federal authorities have detected over 1,100 unauthorized drone incursions near tournament venues. Officials confirmed that 300 of these devices were neutralized and another 500 seized, marking a significant escalation in security efforts for the 48-team international event co-hosted by the United States.

Tournament czar Andrew Giuliani confirmed the figures at the FBI-organized International Police Cooperation Center, noting that the devices were grounded without the use of physical force. While specific interception methods remain undisclosed, the federal response represents a multi-hundred-million-dollar investment into counter-drone infrastructure across 11 host cities. Local police units have undergone specialized training to manage the airspace, an initiative that follows the FBI’s recent disruption of a separate plot involving explosive-laden drones in Washington.

The scale of these operations reflects a growing trend in public event security, contrasting with the 350 incursions recorded during the 2024 Paris Olympics. FBI special agent Doug Olson emphasized that the seized equipment is currently being processed as evidence, as authorities move to identify the operators behind the persistent violations of stadium no-fly zones.
