ADB Grants $11 Million to Finish Kiribati’s Climate-Proof Hospital

The Asian Development Bank has greenlit an $11 million grant to finalize the Betio Hospital in Kiribati, a project strategically positioned to withstand rising sea levels and climate-related flooding while expanding medical access for residents of South Tarawa and the nation’s remote outer islands.

This funding, channeled through the Asian Development Fund, secures the completion of the Climate-Resilient Health Infrastructure and Systems Project. By relocating the facility to higher, inland ground, the government aims to insulate essential medical services from the environmental vulnerabilities that frequently disrupt island infrastructure. The hospital, which received initial backing from the New Zealand government, integrates energy-efficient systems designed to lower long-term maintenance costs while boosting reliability.

Azusa Sato, ADB Regional Director for the Pacific, noted that the facility will serve over half of Kiribati’s population, specifically targeting improvements in maternal care, surgical capacity, and infection prevention. Beyond clinical upgrades, the project functions as a defensive measure against environmental instability, ensuring that life-saving diagnostics and specialist treatments remain accessible despite the increasing frequency of natural hazards in the Pacific region.
