Kerala Opposition Walks Out Over Delayed Fisherfolk Aid

The Kerala Legislative Assembly erupted into chaos on Tuesday as the Left Democratic Front staged a mass walkout. Legislators abandoned the chamber after the Speaker denied an adjournment motion aimed at forcing a debate over stalled financial relief payments intended for coastal families during the annual trawling ban.

Tensions escalated when Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan challenged the proceedings, accusing Forest Minister Shibu Baby John of overstepping his role by intervening while Fisheries Minister V E Abdul Gafoor attempted to address the house. Vijayan argued that such interference effectively bypassed the primary minister’s authority, triggering a heated standoff that halted normal operations.

Responding to the unrest, Minister Gafoor maintained that the government is actively processing disbursements through the established Savings-cum-Relief Scheme. Chief Minister V D Satheesan later stepped in to calm the assembly, pledging that the state would bridge any funding gaps independently should promised central assistance fail to materialize on schedule.
