Instead of funding political activism, the money was diverted to acquire a 152-foot superyacht, a Fifth Avenue penthouse, and a fleet of high-end vehicles, including a $1 million Lamborghini and a $4 million Ferrari. Prosecutors successfully argued that Guo systematically drained the life savings of his supporters through fraudulent schemes, including a private members-only club and the Himalaya Exchange cryptocurrency platform.
Guo, who remains in custody, continues to maintain his innocence and his legal team has signaled plans to appeal the conviction. During the sentencing hearing, he refuted prosecution claims that he had feigned illness to delay the proceedings, detailing a medical episode in his cell earlier that morning. While his defense attorneys attempted to frame his flaunted wealth as a political statement against Chinese leadership, Assistant US Attorney Ryan Finkel dismissed the narrative, labeling Guo a "scammer and a thief" who preyed on those seeking democratic change. In addition to the prison term, the court ordered the forfeiture of $889 million in illicit gains.
