Opposition Bloc Seeks Judicial Review Over Electoral Roll Revisions

Twenty-three opposition parties have petitioned the Chief Justice of India, demanding a formal judicial review of the Special Intensive Revision process. Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose alleges the BJP is manipulating electoral rolls to gain an unfair advantage, prompting a rare display of unity among non-NDA political factions.

The joint letter, which marks a significant consolidation of the INDIA bloc including members like AAP and DMK, stems from a strategic meeting held on June 8. Opposition leaders argue that the current revision of electoral rolls lacks transparency and threatens the integrity of the democratic process, necessitating intervention from the highest court.

Beyond the electoral dispute, Ghose has raised alarms regarding the government's push for a Uniform Civil Code. She suggests the timing of the proposal lacks the necessary public consultation, warning that such legislative moves could incite social friction across the country. The opposition’s move signifies a broader effort to challenge the BJP on both administrative procedure and ideological policy.
